Thermodynamic Gummi Lighthouse Keeper

Tue Feb 2, 2010, 5:21 PM
After periodic waves of paranoia and insanity, I'm trying to sort my life out. Being more optimistic, eating nice cheeses, having French-themed adventures - things like that.

Recently I've been rubbing my eyes in a lot of art books and image blogs, drawing a lot of inspiration from illustrators and street artists: [link] My style seems to have evolved into a simple but obsessive liney cartoon thing which includes the usual and unusual themes of death, sex, fear, taxidermy, genetics, abortion, despair, etiquette, the absurd and nothingness. I carry around a little black book which started as just a place to scribble in at cafes: [link] but some of the ideas have started to develop (even if that means just redrawing them to be wall-sized). I've been reading a lot of graphic novels lately so if I find the patience and a good enough plot, I'd love to try writing my own comic.
I've vaugely fallen back in love with the world in terms of frequenly mind-wanking by surrounding myself with inspirational images, the power of which shouldn't be underestimated. The pretty things that people make makes me happy.

Since I've been scribbling so much, I've sort of gone off painting a bit (but looking at pictures of Francis Bacon's studio house gets you back in the mood to flick colour about). I started going down the easily-subverted religious route with this: [link] but lost interest when I had a difficult review session in which I realized that I find it difficult to explain my work without brutally honest cynicism and unnecessary self-deprication. After a very short period of implosion (and writing FUCK YOU on the wall), I got back to work and started to make weird but more surreal but less abstract pieces which I pretend apply to something meaningful. I learned that 50% of being an artist is knowing how to bullshit, a skill I am gradually mastering. This is demonstrated if you were convinced that any of my work actually featured genetics as a theme.

Oh I separated my collages from the Misc. section: [link] because I felt they diserved their own section and I'm sad and anal about catagorising things.
I'm still trying to wean myself off deviantart by getting a terrifically bland tumblr account which I have no idea how to use: [link] and since I cringe at everything after I have written it, this blog is beautifully nude from text.

Speaking of which I've posted some of my old life class work: [link] and I've started going back to my old school to continue drawing naked people: [link] and interestingly, because of the pen doodles I've done, I've inadvertently gained the confidence to draw the human figure (semi-)accurately with single lines. So I've played around with these sketches to match the style I've adopted recently. Also the ridiculous amount of freedom we have on the course means that I do pretty much no observational work, so life classes are pretty valuable.
Seriously, it's great - we all just sit about playing guitar, reading comics, eating sweets, drinking tea having good chats. We rarely see the tutors, so it's up to you discipline yourself and actually do some work.

I've been submitting online portfolios to universities which consist of the jizz posted on here, but when you have to whittle it down to 10 images, it doesn't imbue you with balls once you see the skeletal blueprints of your visual vomit. For some reason, snowfall is a good enough reason to extend submission deadlines. Not complaining.
There's all sorts of stuff happening which I can't remember or explain. It all just happens.

The growing list of things I want to do:
Assemble pinhole camera, write a comic, make a film, print more t-shirts, make more some stencils, finally paint that bloody shower screen.

Male echidnas have a four-headed penis. During mating, the heads on one side "shut down" and do not grow in size; the other two are used to release semen. The heads used are swapped each time the mammal copulates.

  • Listening to: Beat Tape (Quasimoto, Danger Mouse, Prefuse 73)
  • Reading: Maus, The Last Man, lots of old and weird comics
  • Watching: Monk, Moon, Amelie

Hey man! Sorry I didn't get a chance to see you over the holiday. Weather and that lot kept me indoors. Anyway, I'm back in Edinburgh again now (its colder than my freezer) so if you need to visit you can as always. I collected my art stuff from school yesterday. Saw Mr yearsley, he got my number, said he'd like it if I could go and talk to lower 6th about doing architecture. Should be a good laugh. They put up my 3 black & white self portraits up in staff house. Was really weird, had to ask for them back. haha. Anyway, hope your holiday has been a good!
